James Avery Sands

Greetings earthling, My name is:

I am an American artist and photographer, born and raised in the state of New Jersey.

I have been working as a professional artist for over a decade, and as a photographer for 8 of those long years. I have a deep love for our natural world and for our human species part in its beautiful symphony.

My love of love has led me to working as a wedding photographer full time, with a too long hiatus caused by the Covid pandemic, I find myself returning to the work that helped me find my footing in this world.

Consciously Candid Photography

I define my style of photography as 'consciously candid' in its implementation. My work is subtly mindful, my abilities lie in predicting where to be to get the perfect shot in order to convey the emotion of the moment. I don't overly pose my subjects, nor drag others out of the moment in order to create manufactured beauty. My photography is a documentation, it is not forced, it is natural. My skill in reading a room and following my subjects lends itself to storytelling and beautiful snapshots of emotion. From weddings to concerts to portraits I pride myself on my ability to capture people without making them feel like they are being followed by a photographer.

A desire for creative freedom

Like a phoenix from the ashes, the time I took away from wedding work has led to a blossoming of intense creative freedom for me, that I now take back to my original profession. Each shoot I take part in, for whatever kind of gig, I instill the mindfulness and intensity of my wedding work blended with the creative expression of my self made artistic work. As I continue my artistic journey I plan on throwing myself into my creative pursuits outside of the limits of purely photo work, and hope to support my other passions with the photography I have become known for.

an artist supporting artists

As an artist, my transition into adulthood in our society was dominated by the advice of others. From those suggesting other methods of livelihood, to judgment from those who place little value on artistic work or on my abilities, my artistic journey was one of constant self doubt. Now that I find myself firmly standing on my own two feet as an artist in name, I want to help those who are going through what I went through. If you support my artistry in any way, know that it all goes towards my life's goal of helping to spread love for the arts, and in cultivating a more loving humanity for all.
